When the report Seeing Ourselves: Reflections on Diversity in TV Drama was first published in 2016, it was regarded as the most significant study of diversity on Australian screens since television began in 1956. This new report once again aims to shed light on inclusivity and representation within the industry.

This is a geographical ancestry term, which could have implications for genetics if used precisely. However, « Caucasian » today typically refers broadly to people coded as White by society, the majority of whom are actually not from the area of the Caucasus mountains. Additionally, classifying those coded as White by society as « Caucasian » is a throwback to the racist classification system defined by German anatomist Johann Blumenbach in the late 1700s.

“You cannot make a TV show that’s not diverse,” said Darnell Hunt, co-author of UCLA’s annual Hollywood Diversity Report, which is in its sixth edition. “The majority of babies born in America today are people of color. And that’s been true for the last four or five years.” This is a fact that can’t be ignored because, Hunt said, “you’re talking about not only your current market, but your future market.”
